Prepare Tax Schedule SE

If you were self employed and made more than $400 or employed by a church and made more than $108.20 then you need to prepare Tax Schedule SE. If the only self employment income that you received was from being a minister, member of a religious order or Christian Science practitioner and you filed form 4361 with IRS approval then you do not need to prepare tax schedule SE.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out your name and social security number at the top of page 1. Make sure to only put the name and social security number of the person who had the self employment tax if you are filing a joint return.

    • 2

Refer to the chart on the first page to determine if you're able to file the short Tax Schedule SE or if you have to complete the long Tax Schedule SE. If you're able to file the short version then stay on Page 1. If you must file the long version then continue to Page 2.

    • 3

Complete the questions on the bottom of Page 1 if you're able to file the short Tax Schedule SE. You'll need your 1040 and other tax forms that you completed to answer these questions.

    • 4

Go to Page 2 if you must complete the long Tax Schedule SE. Once again you will need your 1040 and other completed tax forms to answer the necessary questions.

    • 5

Enter the information from Tax Schedule SE on the appropriate spots on your Tax Schedule 1040. The information from line 6 Page 1 and line 13 Page 2, depending upon which one you must complete, has to be entered on your 1040.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to print legibly on Tax Schedule SE and all tax documents.

Are you serious? The answer to how to prepare sched SE is essentially, "fill in the blanks on page one, then go to page two" and "print legibly"?? I hope nobody paid you to submit this useless how-to. The schedule SE already says that. Next time try explaining what the questions and blanks mean, what the information required is used for, or something that explains the data behind the form. Supplement what is already in the readers hand if they have a form and are looking for guidance filling it out. Re-stating what is already on the form doesn't help anyone.
