Unexploded ordnance (UXO) hazards are becoming more prevalent as wars move around the globe. UXO is a broad category of explosives that can be anything from a dud bomb to a land mine to an unfired bullet. When you come across UXO, it is important to follow the proper procedures for reporting and dealing with it to avoid injuring yourself and making the area safe for others.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Assume it is real. If you come across something you think might be UXO, treat it as if it is. This means leaving it for professionals to investigate. Even flipping a live UXO over could cause it to explode so it is best not to disturb them.
Step2
Mark the site. Place an easy-to-see marker near the device. White engineers tape or a shirt on a stick at about waist level would be ideal. You want to make the hazard visible to disposal teams from a distance so they won't stumble over it when they come to clear it.
Step3
Move to a safe distance. A safe distance from an explosive depends on the size and type of explosive. A good rule of thumb is for a small object like a grenade or mortar shell move back 300 meters, for anything larger move 600 or more meters.
Step4
Contact law enforcement or military authorities in the area. You will need to tell them who you are, the location of the device, the type of explosive you think it might be and how you have marked the device.
Step5
Wait for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team to arrive. Depending upon where you are and the resources in the area, this can take some time so get comfortable. Remember to stay away from the UXO and keep any innocents away from it as well.
