Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
Step1
Think about what you know how to do. Make a list of things you are good at doing. Make another list of things you would like to do for other people. Now that you know what you can offer to others, it's time to start looking for volunteer work.
Step2
Start in your own community. Local schools and churches use volunteers for different things. You can work directly helping people in various programs, or you can work in the background doing office work. Teachers often need volunteers to cut out patterns for crafts or make copies.
Step3
Volunteer for your school council or Parent Teacher Association (PTA). You can help the school and have direct input into your child's school life.
Step4
Reach beyond your local community to the larger community around you. Downtown centers have nonprofit organizations that help people in your city or town. Many of these organizations enlist volunteers to run most of their programs.
Step5
Visit a volunteer center. Some cities have umbrella organizations that oversee the work of other nonprofit organizations. Check there to see which companies need your help.
Step6
Become a sports coach. Many teams count on volunteers to run their programs. Coaches arrange teams, coach kids and hold practices. Parents are grateful for your willingness to help and kids benefit from your athletic abilities.
Step7
Tailor your resume for each specific job. Show your skills and specific experience. Write a cover letter outlining what you can do as a volunteer. Then approach organizations with a positive attitude and a sincere willingness to help. Be professional. Approach this as if you were applying for a paying position with a big firm.
