How to Champion a Cause

You read about a problem in the newspaper and wonder how you can help, but you just never get around to actually doing anything. Stop procrastinating and find a cause you can passionately support. You'll reap the benefits by making new friends who share your concerns while also making the world a better place.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a cause. Start by observing things around you and finding something that you think is an injustice or is unfair. Read the newspaper for world or national causes, but don't forget your local community.

    • 2

Research your cause to see what others are doing about it. Find out the background on the cause by reading newspaper articles and books or find someone who can explain what's going on. See if any organizations are available to join that already support the cause you chose.

    • 3

Determine ways you can influence your chosen issue through activism. Create a list of what you'd like to see happen and ways you can achieve your goals.

    • 4

Get others involved in your cause. Host a meeting at the community center, post flyers around the community, set up a booth at a local event, or post your thoughts online. You'll want to start small, maybe with a handful of people, until you gain experience as an activist.

    • 5

Act on your ideas with your new activist friends. Your action plan should take into account the skills and talents you have available, such as holding a rally, printing out flyers, holding a fundraiser, or collecting items and shipping them to areas in need.

    • 6

Keep being an activist after your first attempt. Don't get frustrated if people don't jump on board at first.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have the time to form an activist group, contribute your time to an already established organization.

  • Use your vote to help support your cause by finding out each candidate's stand on the issues that interest you.

  • Take on leadership roles by getting involved in organizations, running for public office, or writing articles about your cause.
