Remove all dead limbs and branches and dense growth from the mesquite tree. Use regular garden pruners to trim away thin limbs or new growth. Make sure they are sharp because dull pruners can cause a lot more harm than good.

Trim large-sized limbs with a chainsaw. Use lopping shears for thick branches. If you're trying to reach limbs or branches that are up high, use one of the pole-saw combinations that are sold at Home Depot or other do-it-yourself stores.

Tie yourself to the tree with a rope or chain if you're using a ladder to reach the higher branches. If you fall, the rope will catch you.

Leave the collar of the tree intact if you're removing limbs. Don't cut it flush because you can kill the tree by damaging it's live tissue.
