You've just been invited to play your first tennis game and you don't want to look like the world's biggest klutz. Have no fear. These steps will have you walking on the court like a pro. After that, the rest is up to you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Show up with a racquet and balls, if necessary. There are many brands of racquets to suit your style of play. Most clubs and resorts provide tennis balls, but if you are unsure or are playing on a public court, BYOB.
Step2
Know the basics of scoring. Love equals zero. You start at Love, so scoring goes Love, 15, 30, 40 and Game. 1 point equals 15, 2 points equals 30 and so on. If you and your opponent both reach 40 at the same time, the score is "40 all." You always say your score first. Most of the time players play a set; the first person who gets to 15 wins the set. Typically the best 2 out of 3 sets wins the match.
Step3
Know your surface. Most Americans play on hard courts, but you can also play on red or green clay courts. The ball bounces higher and faster on a clay court. Additionally, you can play on grass courts, like those used for Wimbledon. The ball bounces lower and slower on a grass court.
Step4
Dress for success. Don't show up in your running or workout togs. Women should wear an athletic skirt and top. Men should wear athletic shorts and an athletic top. Tennis apparel is available for children too. Everyone should wear tennis" shoes, not running shoes. To shop for tennis apparel online, check out Tennis Warehouse.
Step5
Follow etiquette rules. During a point, you want to remain quiet if you are observing a match. Clap when a point is over, and then remain quiet until the next point. Tennis is a refined sport, so your language should clean and appropriate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stay hydrated. Many people don't realize how intense a tennis workout can be, even at a beginner's level. Bring plenty of water.
