Nearly every culture celebrates an activity connected to the traditional Christmas stocking. Centuries ago, children left out their shoes or stockings, filled with offerings for Santa Claus and his reindeer. Modern stockings hang empty until Christmas morning, when they are found filled with goodies. Make a Christmas stocking to carry on this tradition.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cut two pieces of red fleece in a sock shape and use simple whip stitches to create the traditional red-and-white stocking. Trim with white faux fur. Patterns can be found online.

  2. Step 2

Make a paper stocking using brown paper, such as a paper from a brown grocery bag. Hole punch the perimeter of two similar sock or stocking shapes. Use colorful yarn to sew the holes together, threading the yarn through the punched holes and tying a knot at the end.

  3. Step 3

Use antique fabrics or bedding as the main focus of an heirloom stocking. Cut two symmetrical shapes from a fabric, sew together with whipstitches and sew the top edges (to seal and prevent raveling, not to sew them together).

  4. Step 4

Go to the craft or fabric department of a store, and ask for fabric with pre-printed designs for Christmas stockings. Making these stockings usually only requires a few steps to create finished stockings. This choice is good if you want patterns or special themed designs.

  5. Step 5

Knit stockings for a special homemade touch. If you're already an avid knitter, choose yarn and a favorite pattern and knit away. If you're new to knitting, find do-it-yourself kits at craft stores; these kits teach you to knit and provide the instructions and materials for making stockings.
