How to Get Golf Course Management Training

Golf course management is a career in which many people would like to take part, whether golf professionals or simply golf enthusiasts. Like most career fields though, there are fewer management positions in the golf industry than other fields. To work toward qualification for the competitive job market of golf course managers, follow these steps.

  1. Step 1

    Love the game. As a golf course manager, you will be constantly immersed in all aspects of golf. Prospective employers will expect you to enjoy the game, but as a golf professional, you will need a sincere passion for the game or else you will tire of the job quickly.

  2. Step 2

    Know and understand the game of golf. It is important that, as a golf course manager, you know how to play golf. You can receive training in school by joining teams or by simply playing on your own.

  3. Step 3

    Get some golf industry experience. You will not only need to know the game, but also the industry. Starting out working in a pro shop is a good way to get experience.

  4. Step 4

    Understand business management. Managing a golf course requires many of the same skills as running other small business. Experience working as a business manager is a big plus.

  5. Step 5

    Portray class and style. As a golf course manager you will be the public face of the golf course. It is important to present yourself in a style of dress and manner of acting that prospective employers feel will put a good face on their course.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some universities have golf course management training programs that can substitute for work experience. Short of actual experience college courses on business management would be an asset. Most golf course management degrees including extensive and specialized training in the business aspects of golf.
  • A mixture of industry experience and specialized education is perhaps the best bet for attaining a job as a golf course manager.
