Scuba diving can be addictive, and many divers rack up as many specialized training courses as they can. However, not many divers get a dive equipment certification. That's a shame because this course could save you a lot of aggravation and expense.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Open water certification card
  • Dive shop offering the course
  • Telephone or email to contact your instructor prior to taking the course
  1. Step 1

Get certified as an open water diver if you have not already done so. Almost all certifying agencies require this step prior to taking a dive equipment course. You need to know how a scuba system works before you can work on it.

  2. Step 2

Decide where you will take the course. Your local dive shop may offer it, but chances are good that you'll have to go somewhere else to take a dive equipment and repair course.

  3. Step 3

Contact your instructor about what materials he or she expects you to have prior to taking the class. Since this is generally an introduction to equipment repair and maintenance class, you should not have to make a major investment in tools or new equipment before your instruction session.

  4. Step 4

Listen and observe closely. Your instructor will cover topics like recommended maintenance, proper storage and care, troubleshooting common equipment problems, equipment configurations and the correct operation of dive equipment.

  5. Step 5

Put what you have just learned to use. You will now know how to keep your equipment in better condition for a longer amount of time.

Tips & Warnings
  • These classes are not enough to qualify you as a dive equipment technician. You must attend much more rigorous training in order to get that certification. If you are interested in doing that, talk to your instructor or contact one of the certification organizations like PADI or NAUI.
