Anorexia nervosa is a common eating disorder. Symptoms include excessive thinness, excessive weight loss, obsession with calories and the use of vomiting, diuretics or extreme exercise to loose weight. While a diagnosis is a step in the right direction, treatment and follow through can pose challenges.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get an official diagnosis of anorexia from a care provider. Once received, you and your care provider can start taking the necessary steps to reverse your anorexia. If you're severely anorexic, treatment may require hospitalization followed by outpatient care.

  2. Step 2

Consider getting counseling from a therapist or a psychologist. Since people with anorexia often use food to control issues and stress, you need new coping skills to decrease anxiety. In addition, you should work with a counselor to change your body image. People who suffer from anorexia feel as if they could never be too thin. You may need one-on-one counseling sessions or group counseling sessions.

  3. Step 3

Plan a healthy diet with a dietician or a nutrition counselor. As an anorexic you should not suddenly start eating whatever and whenever you want.

  4. Step 4

Take any recommended medicines. While medicine isn't often used to treat anorexia itself, anti-depressants may be used to prevent a relapse.

  5. Step 5

Be patient. Recovery from a disease like anorexia nervosa may take several years.
