Waking up outdoors to the smell of fresh brewing coffee and bacon cooking on an open fire brings a smile to the face of most campers. Start the day with a hearty breakfast that keeps a camper or hiker going through the physical rigors of the afternoon until dinnertime.

From Quick Guide: Break for Breakfast
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Propane cook stove
  • Iron cookware
  • Large pot
  • Percolator and coffee
  • Bacon, potatoes, onions and eggs
  • Pancake mix, syrup or jam
  • Oatmeal or granola, nuts, dried fruits, cinnamon, yogurt or milk powder
  • English muffins, bacon or ham, eggs, cheese, tin foil
  • Bread, fork, jam or peanut butter
  • Cereal and milk
  • Bulgur wheat, onions, cheese and soy sauce
  1. Step 1

Cook camp breakfast on a propane operated camp stove (single or multiple burner) or an open fire. For more information see the eHow titled "How to Cook on a Campfire."

  2. Step 2

Bring sufficient cookware that withstands open flame like cast iron. The number of available pots usually determines the type of breakfast dish.

  3. Step 3

Begin breakfast by placing a large pot of water on the fire for cleaning and cooking. Use an old-fashioned percolator to make the coffee, which goes on the fire next.

  4. Step 4

Put the bacon in a skillet over low heat and cook until done. Add thinly sliced potatoes and onions to the bacon grease and fry. Add scrambled eggs over the top and cover with a lid until done. Crumble the bacon over top and serve a one-pot camp breakfast.

  5. Step 5

Make hardy whole-wheat or buckwheat pancakes with maple syrup or jam using the cast iron skillet. Prepare the mix ahead and pack in a container or plastic bag or use a mix that only requires water. Add freshly foraged berries for flavored cakes.

  6. Step 6

Opt for a non-cooked camp breakfast and mix raw oatmeal or granola, nuts, dried fruit and cinnamon with yogurt or milk powder and water for a healthy meal loaded with protein and fiber.

  7. Step 7

Prepare breakfast sandwiches at home with English muffins, cooked bacon or ham, eggs and a slice of cheese. Wrap in tin foil and reheat on the campfire for a quick and easy camp breakfast.

  8. Step 8

Secure a slice of bread on a large fork or stick and hold high over the flame while turning until toasted. Add jam or peanut butter.

  9. Step 9

Have cereal and milk for the traditional breakfast eaters. Use milk powder and water if backpacking to save on space and pack weight.

  10. Step 10

Make a camp breakfast for the serious hikers in the group with bulgur wheat soaked overnight. Add the wheat to fried onions and brown, melt lots of cheese on top, add soy sauce and serve this rib-sticking meal with lots of hot coffee.

Tips & Warnings
  • Start breakfast early if cooking on an open fire. The meal takes some time to prepare.
  • Keep the coals of the fire from the previous night if safe to start the morning cook fire.
  • Use the fire-ring with a grate at the campground to cook on or bring a small metal grate for a homemade version over the campfire.
