If you're looking for a good workout and want to kick a little butt while you exercise, take a chance on roller derby. If the league in your area is full, start your own team and you'll be rounding the track in no time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Helmet
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Mouth guard
  • Quad skates
  1. Step 1

Contact your local roller derby league and make sure your team will be able to join. You don't want to go to the trouble of putting a team together if you won't be able to hold a bout.

  2. Step 2

Gather five women. Women's roller derby teams are making a comeback. While there are ways that men can participate, most of the teams are women only.

  3. Step 3

Decide who will be the jammer. The jammer is the speed skater of the group. She has to round the track and try to pass the other team's blockers. She scores a point for every blocker she passes.

  4. Step 4

Select the blockers. The blockers are the four defensive players of the team. These girls try to stop the opponent's jammer.

  5. Step 5

Purchase equipment. You will be required to provide your own helmet, knee and elbow pads and mouth guard. Also get a pair of quality quad skates.

  6. Step 6

Practice together. Everyone needs to learn how to skate fast and fall correctly. Plus, the more you practice together the better you'll be in a bout.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get more than five people if you can, so that way you will have a few substitutes. With the fast pace of roller derby, players may want a break.
  • Get involved in roller derby for the fun of it, not for the money. Most roller derby girls don't make any money and actually pay dues in order to play.
  • Have good health insurance before you start a roller derby team. Most leagues require it since roller derby is a full-contact sport and injuries are common.
