To practice cosmetology in Oregon, you must receive appropriate training and pass tests to qualify for your license. Here are the steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick your area. The four major areas of Cosmetology offered by the Oregon Cosmetology Board are Barbering, Esthetics, Hair Design and Nail Technology. If you have studied in a different area or are transferring from another state, call the board to ask where you fit.

  2. Step 2

Complete the required number of hours for your specialty. You also must complete the required 100 hours of Career Development and the 150 hours of Safety/Infection Control.

  3. Step 3

Schedule the written and practical tests. The practical test is completed first and is a test of your skills in a timed environment. The written test is given by computer in Salem.

  4. Step 4

Submit the application from the Oregon Health Licensing Agency along with the $15 application fee plus the $33 certificate fee for each of the areas in which you are applying. The testing fees include $25 for each field you are testing in and $25 for the Oregon Laws and Rules section.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always study and practice before the exams to ensure a fresh memory. It is also a good idea to time yourself for the practical part of the test to make sure you can finish in the allotted times.
