How to Get a Cosmetology License in Oregon

To practice cosmetology in Oregon, you must receive appropriate training and pass tests to qualify for your license. Here are the steps.

1. Pick your area. The four major areas of Cosmetology offered by the Oregon Cosmetology Board are Barbering, Esthetics, Hair Design and Nail Technology. If you have studied in a different area or are transferring from another state, call the board to ask where you fit.

2. Complete the required number of hours for your specialty. You also must complete the required 100 hours of Career Development and the 150 hours of Safety/Infection Control.

3. Schedule the written and practical tests. The practical test is completed first and is a test of your skills in a timed environment. The written test is given by computer in Salem.

4. Submit the application from the Oregon Health Licensing Agency along with the $15 application fee plus the $33 certificate fee for each of the areas in which you are applying. The testing fees include $25 for each field you are testing in and $25 for the Oregon Laws and Rules section.
