When displaying a prized photograph, print or poster, the frame can be just as important as the picture itself. There are several factors to consider when you choose a frame to complement your picture. Here are some helpful tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Observe the color and texture of the picture's mat, if there is one. The frame should complement the matboard as well as the picture. For example, a light-colored wood would likely offset a picture with a bright yellow matboard.
Step2
Make sure the frame and picture fit. This is especially important for large pictures and posters. Improper fits could result in buckling at the back of the frame, or you might have to trim the picture itself.
Step3
Take an accurate measurement of the picture before setting out to purchase the actual frame. Having the proper information at hand will make the frame shopping go smoothly.
Step4
Figure out where the picture is going to be displayed before finding the frame. Wall color can be an important factor in deciding the frame's color and material. Think of how the frame will match with the color of your walls.
Step5
Decide if you are going the conservative route or trying something a little more fun. Decorative or specialty frames can add a nice touch to the light-hearted pictures you display in your home or office.

Tips & Warnings

  • If there are any doubts, just play it safe with basic black. A basic black frame compliments almost any print or photograph and will not offset wall colors.
