Praying to God, like any conversation with a friend, requires talking and listening. Prayer begins as a belief in God, grows into faith that God can influence our lives and eventually turns into a loving relationship. To begin a life a prayer, even if you have never prayed before, just follow these steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create a setting that makes praying easy and natural. Some people like to kneel, others prefer sitting. Some people pray with music in the background, whereas others prefer quiet. You can use a Bible, spiritual book, memorized prayers or something you improvise. Writing in a journal can also inspire discussion with God.

  2. Step 2

Make a plan. It doesn't have to be elaborate, just something simple like "I will pray for 15 minutes while sitting in this chair." A plan helps you to overcome distractions.

  3. Step 3

Start praying. Sometimes it helps to use a memorized prayer or a scripture reading to begin. With practice some people are able to go in and out with prayer with little effort, but don't be discouraged if that isn't you. Over time, you will learn the most effective ways to pray.

  4. Step 4

Close your prayer. Again, a set prayer or reading can be helpful. Otherwise improvise a closing as a way of saying goodbye to God.

  5. Step 5

Make prayer a regular part of your schedule. Find the time, setting and method that works best for you. The more often you pray, the easier it will come to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • A spiritual director can give you advise on how to grow closer to God and increase the effectiveness of your prayer. Ask your pastor or church leader to recommend someone.
