    What to Consider in VoIP

  1. Step 1

Check out the different price points among the VoIP service providers.

  2. Step 2

Determine the benefits gained by choosing VoIP over keeping your current telephone service. Adding more minutes to your cell phone remains an alternative.

  3. Step 3

Ask people you know, who subscribe to VoIP, about their provider's customer service. Waiting time, results and friendliness remain important to the customer.

  4. Step 4

Compare the different features offered by the VoIP providers. Note additional fees and freebies such as call waiting, fax, caller-ID, voice mail and minutes.

  5. Step 5

See which companies allow transferring your current phone number if important.

  6. Step 6

Ensure the VoIP provides emergency 911 calling, if you need it. See the Federal Communication Commission's "voip911" website for details about emergency calls, especially from the "Consumer Information" section.

  7. Step 7

Know the security and privacy of your phone conversation. Ask a potential provider by phone or read the information from their website plan.

  8. Find a VoIP Provider

  9. Step 1

Go to the VoipReview website to search for providers in your area.

  10. Step 2

Select either "Home" or "Business" and click the circle.

  11. Step 3

Enter your area code in the "Enter Area code" box and click "Go." Click "Advanced" to filter for state and city in "Filter Results" and click all the features.

  12. Step 4

See the plan and price then click "Details." The company website provides all the details to help in your decision.

  13. Step 5

Choose a plan and follow instructions on downloads and equipment needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • A few providers offer service through a dial-up connection but it's best to have high speed DSL or Cable.
