How to Replace an Axle on a Wheeled Toy

Replacing the broken axle on a toy can easily be done by even the most novice do-it-yourselfers. The following steps will guide you through this process.

Things You'll Need

• Pliers
• Hammer
• Steel rod
• Piece of wood

Instructions

1. Turn the toy on its side for easier access. Next, remove the push nuts with your pliers, and then take off the lock washers.

2. Remove the toy's wheels and the flat washers. Set aside all the washers and nuts that you remove.

3. Pull out the toy's broken axle. Take the steel rod and cut it to the correct length for the toy.

4. Put the new axle in place. Install the flat washers and reattach the wheels.

5. Slide the lock washers on the wheels, and then set the toy on its side. You may want to place one wheel in a piece of wood to help hold the toy in place.

6. Slip a push nut over the wheel facing upwards. Carefully use the hammer to get it into place. Flip over the toy, and do the same thing to the other side.

Tips & Warnings

• Measure the broken axle, and then take these measurements to the store when you make your replacement purchase. If you do not want to cut the steel rod at home, many stores will do this for you.

• Be careful not to use a heavy hand on the hammer, or you risk causing more harm to the toy.
