How to Use a Urethane Silicone Adhesive

You can use urethane silicone adhesives to bond durable materials, such as wood and metal. The adhesive forms a strong but flexible bond, making it especially useful in engineering projects.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Caulk gun
  1. Step 1

Make sure that the surfaces you want to bond are relatively clean and smooth.

  2. Step 2

Apply the adhesive. If you are using a small tube, the adhesive may be applied straight from the tube. Larger tubes fit well into caulk guns, which make applying the adhesive easy and concentrated so that there isn't a lot of accidental adhesive in unwanted areas.

  3. Step 3

Press the surfaces together with a clamp or something that exertsconsiderable pressure. The glue will dry within a few hours, but should be left to reach full strength over several days.

  4. Step 4

Douse the applied adhesive with alcohol if you wish to remove it, but make sure it is done before the glue has hardened. Once the adhesive has dried, it is difficult to remove without damaging the material it is attached to.

Tips & Warnings
  • This particular adhesive takes a long time to completely dry. Expect to wait up to three days before using the object you are gluing. Otherwise, the glue may not set properly.
  • Be careful to contain the glue to the places you want it. Remove unwanted glue with alcohol before it has dried.
