Things You'll Need:

  • California map
  1. Step 1

Get a map of California to help you navigate your way through the San Marcos Pass, also called Route 154. A current map will show you the highways and exits you'll need to take in order to get there.

  2. Step 2

Begin at Highway 101. There are two ways to get to the San Marcos Pass from California Highway 101. If you're traveling south into Santa Barbara County, take the Route 154 exit off of Highway 101 approximately five miles north of Buellton. If traveling north on 101, take the State Street exit.

  3. Step 3

Enjoy the scenery. Once you're on the pass, which takes you from the coast to approximately 35 miles inland, you'll notice how beautiful the landscape is. San Marcos Pass takes drivers through the rolling hills of the Los Padres forest and past Lake Cachuma.

  4. Step 4

Stop and take it in. Along the route you'll see several sleepy little towns to visit, many of which accommodate travelers' interest in the local wineries. There are plenty of vineyards and wineries to visit for a taste of the local wines.

  5. Step 5

Once you've driven the San Marcos Pass, whether you've gone north or south on the road, visit some of the local attractions. North of the pass, you'll find picturesque towns and fine restaurants. South of the Pass is Santa Barbara with its beaches, a zoo and lively, nightly entertainment.
