Tasting wine does not mean merely taking a drink and being done with it. To fully enjoy a wine, you must also smell it. The act of tasting wine correctly is something anyone can learn as a means of fully experiencing your beverage.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Only fill the wine glass half full so that it can be easily swirled without spilling. Swirl the wine in the glass to stir up the scent and make it easier to detect.

  2. Step 2

Bring the glass up to your face and deeply inhale the aroma of the wine at the top of the glass.

  3. Step 3

Concentrate on the scent as it enters your nostrils. Think about what you smell and try to identify the various odors you detect.

  4. Step 4

Open your mouth and allow some wine to flow in. Do not take a large gulp or swallow it. Simply hold the wine in your mouth.

  5. Step 5

Breathe through your nose as the wine sets on your tongue. You detect most of the taste through your nasal passages, not your tongue.

  6. Step 6

Identify the flavors and smells of the wine as it rests in your mouth.

  7. Step 7

Swallow the wine and enjoy the length of the wine, which is how long you still taste and smell the wine when it no longer rests in your mouth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Analyzing a wine properly through tasting allows you to detect the tastes and smells you do not like and avoid them in future wines.
  • If you are at a large wine tasting event, avoid becoming intoxicated by spitting out the wine. Let it simply flow back into your glass instead of swallowing it.
