Instructions

    • 1

Allow plenty of time for the invitations. Send dinner invitations two to three weeks ahead, and luncheon invitations two weeks in advance. More formal affairs require two to three months notice.

    • 2

Plan a menu that is fitting of the occasion. Simple is usually best and gets you out of the kitchen faster so that you can spend time with your guests.

    • 3

Serve cocktails and hors d'oeuvres as a way of relaxing everyone before dinner is served. This gives you time to mingle as well.

    • 4

Prepare a fabulous dessert that can be made ahead of time. No matter what you serve for the main course, wow dinner party guests and send them home remembering that great dessert.

    • 5

Make a seating plan that will allow people to enjoy the company of one another. For formal dinners, use place cards. For more casual gatherings, allow people to seat themselves.

    • 6

Prepare for the unexpected. A large part of being a gracious host is being ready for anything, from spills to unexpected guests. Laugh off accidents and mistakes. Pull up another chair to the table for an extra guest.

    • 7

Set the stage with good manners. A warm, welcoming environment, good food, interesting friends and gracious hosting make for a memorable gathering.
