Step 1
Check with your local DMV office to see how they define a moped and what licensing category they fit into. Most states agree that a moped is a motorized bicycle under 50cc.

Call your auto insurance agent to see about liability insurance for the moped. You will also need to register it with the DMV. Make sure that you have all the necessary information from the dealer where you bought it.

Step 3
Complete the required testing for either the moped or motorcycle license. Pay the license and registration fees.

Familiarize yourself with the laws regarding mopeds in your state. Where are you allowed to ride and where is it not safe for you? Meet other moped riders in your area to find out about their experiences around your area.
