How to Follow the Real Yellow Brick Road

Dorothy had to go to Oz to find the Yellow Brick Road but you don't have to make such a long trek. All you have to do is take a trip to the middle of the United States to Sedan, Kansas, home of the real Yellow Brick Road.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the Yellow Brick Road. The Yellow Brick Road circles the entire downtown area of Sedan and with over 10,000 bricks you'll be sure to see it in no time.

    • 2

Find someone you know on the bricks. Famous people like Whoopie Goldberg, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Bob Hope and many others can be found along the road. There is also a brick for every state in the nation and 28 foreign countries.

    • 3

Come during Memorial Day Weekend and experience the Yellow Brick Road Festival. This is an exciting time in Sedan with many different Oz-related contests and a parade.

    • 4

See the sights of Sedan. Visit the Emmett Kelly Museum, Hollow's St. Charles School House or one of the many retailers on Main Street.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sedan is a small town of only 1300 people. Community members suggested the Yellow Brick Road as a city development project in 1988. They feared the town was dying and saw this as an opportunity to bring tourists to the area.

  • The Yellow Brick Road was financed by "selling" bricks. People or organizations would pay money to have their names printed on the bricks before they were laid into the road.

  • There are no interstate highways that lead to Sedan, so make sure you check a map or get directions.
