How To

How to Take Prenatal Yoga Classes

Contributor
By eHow Contributing Writer

Prenatal yoga classes are offered at gyms, birthing facilities and by private instructors. Prenatal yoga helps pregnant women stay healthy and in shape during their pregnancies. It helps them bond with their unborn babies and helps prepare their body for the rigors of labor and childbirth.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consult with your care provider to make sure you can take a prenatal yoga class. As long as you have a healthy pregnancy though, there are few reasons why you can't take a yoga class.

  2. Step 2

Contact your birthing facility to find out if they offer prenatal yoga classes. If not, talk to your care provider and your childbirth educator. Perhaps your childbirth educator is a prenatal yoga instructor and can start a class for you and your childbirth preparation classmates.

  3. Step 3

Give your local gyms a call to see if any of them offer prenatal yoga classes. If they don't, they may know of a place you can take prenatal yoga. If you still can't find a prenatal yoga class, you may be able to take a regular yoga class, as long as you instructor knows you are pregnant and you listen to your body.

  4. Step 4

Come prepared to your classes. Bring water, your yoga mat and dress comfortably so you can get the most out of your prenatal yoga class.

  5. Step 5

Be prepared to do many poses or asanas during your classes. Common poses during prenatal yoga includes the cat-cow (pelvic tilt), side-lying, squatting and the tailor pose (sitting cross-legged).

Tips & Warnings
  • Listen to your body while doing prenatal yoga. If something doesn't feel good, don't do it.
