How to Buy a Gift for a New Mom
A baby's birth is cause for celebration and the first time mom deserves a medal. Since they don't hand out awards at the hospital, a gift idea for the new mom is in order. By all means, buy many baby goodies but don't forget a gift for the new mother as well.

Keep your focus. A new mom gift is for the mother, not the child. Do not choose cute little outfits or baby books. Purchase a present that caters to the new mom's needs, wants and of course, tastes.

2
Remember that she's got a newborn. New moms are sleep deprived. They wear comfy clothes and can sleep standing up. Comfort becomes a key element in choosing a gift. Soft, easily washable pajamas (with easy access if she's nursing) and new sheets are a much better choice than an 18-hole day pass for the local country club.

Pamper her. Try gift certificates for services at a local spa. Note the difference between "spa" and "gym." Give her the gift of a relaxing massage therapist, not a freakishly happy aerobics instructor.

Offer your services. Brand new moms feel guilty leaving their newborns. As a result, they rarely ask for a babysitter. Explain that as part of the new mother gift, you can't wait to care for the baby while she goes out. Even if she's not ready for a night on the town, every new mom can appreciate an afternoon of baby-free errands.

Show up and take charge. First time mothers still think they can do it all, and wear themselves out trying. Give her permission to rest. Arrive on her doorstep with strict orders for her to take a long nap while you watch the baby. Unplug the phone and politely ask visitors to return another time. If you can manage it, wash the dishes and run a few loads of laundry while she sleeps.

Tips & Warnings
Don't buy a new mom a "get in shape" gift. She doesn't need or want to be reminded that her body has changed. Exercise equipment, gym memberships and invitations to the nearest Curves class are not appreciated.
