With the busy lives we lead it can be surprisingly difficult to stay in touch with family. Fortunately, the Internet has made the global village smaller, making communication from a distance easier than ever. Learn how to keep in touch with family.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Schedule conversations. When something is a priority, you make time for it. Scheduling ahead can help. Maybe you live across the country and decide to call your parents or siblings every Sunday evening. Find a routine that works for both of your schedules.

  2. Step 2

Plan regular occasions to get together if you live in driving distance. Invite relatives over for dinner once a month or plan some type of gathering once a month.

  3. Step 3

E-mail. In today's world, this may be one of the most convenient ways to stay in touch since most people have Internet access at both home and work. Even if it's just to say hello, make a point to send frequent messages that keep others up to date on what's new in your life.

  4. Step 4

Use an instant messaging system. When you and a family member are online at the same time, you can have an interactive conversation online. If you both have webcams, you can even see each other while you chat.

  5. Step 5

Take advantage of online photo albums. One of the hardest parts about distance between family members is that you can talk to them, but you can't see them. Using online photo albums keeps each up on the latest happenings and activities; maybe even what the newest baby looks like month by month.

  6. Step 6

Start a blog. Posting messages to a blog can serve as an online journal. Therapeutic to some, it's also a great way to stay in touch with family.

  7. Step 7

Plan visits. Even if it's only once in a great while, planning times to see each other maintains a connection and gives everyone something to look forward to.
