Every home and car should be supplied with a first aid kit. First aid kits should contain an assortment of basic supplies to handle a variety of emergency situations. Keep first aid kits in a convenient, easy to spot location so when others are in your home or car they will have ready access should an emergency arise.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Plastic container
Step1
Stock with basic supplies. Your list should include: Adhesive tape, antibiotic ointment, hot and cold packs, finger splints, gauze rolls and pads, ace bandage, hand sanitizer, flushing bottle, 2 pair of disposable gloves, cotton balls and swabs, antiseptic solution or wipes, saline eye wash and a first aid manual.
Step2
Include these medications: activated charcoal for use when instructed by Poison Control, anti-diarrhea medicine, antihistamine, pain reliever, EpiPen for persons with severe allergies prescribed by a doctor, hydrocortisone cream and a medicine cup or spoon.
Step3
Add a cell phone, car charger and emergency contact numbers including Poison Control.
Step4
Remember sunscreen, waterproof flashlight and batteries, and matches and candles.
Step5
Check and restock your first aid kit every three months. Dispose of all outdated medicines and sunscreens to guarantee effectiveness when needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • When traveling in cold climates always include blankets as a part of emergency preparedness. These don't have to be in your kit all the time, but be sure to add them before you travel.
  • Show children where the first aid kit is for your house. Take time to go over each item showing them how to use what they can and when to call 911.
