Scandinavia is composed of the northernmost areas of Europe including Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Norway. The countries share the trait of being water-lubbers but have individual characteristics that attract tourists. The history of Denmark extends back to a time before history was written to an era of Vikings, castles and forests. Traces of the country's past remain, especially the lure toward water-related activities. The past, present and future of Iceland often blend together as the forces of nature continue to change the country. Visitors can travel to glaciers, volcanoes and numerous lakes. The number of rivers and forests provide places for quiet reflection in Finland. Like the other nations of Scandinavia, Norway is a study in using technology to connect isolated areas.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research costs of Scandinavian air passes. Using a SAS Visit Scandinavian/Europe Air Pass can save you money on one-way travel between and within Scandinavian cities and some European cities.

  2. Step 2

Be aware that road conditions may be unpredictable in some remote areas, especially in Sweden, northern Norway and Finland. Expect highland and mountain roads to be closed in winter. Inform others of your travel plans when driving through remote areas, especially during winter. Travel with at least one other car and use a four-wheel-drive vehicle in mountainous areas.

  3. Step 3

Book your room in advance whenever possible. Vacationing Europeans fill even the countryside inns.

  4. Step 4

Bring dark sunglasses and an eye mask. Be aware that sunrise is sometimes at 4 a.m. The sunlight slants at a rarely-seen angle because the area is so far north on the globe.

  5. Step 5

Enjoy tax-free shopping. Show your foreign passport to avoid paying taxes on major purchases. Inquire about the tax-free policy when you purchase 50 SF or more.

  6. Step 6

Consider buying a Scanrail'n Drive Pass or a Scanrail Pass when planning travel to Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway. The passes can be a money saver.

Tips & Warnings
  • You must have a round-trip ticket on SAS airline between Europe and North America to be eligible to purchase a SAS air pass.
  • Improper eye protection can cause problems with the strong sunlight. Sunglasses may help you sleep during the early-morning sunrise.
