Switzerland is synonymous with power in tourism, banking, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Some of the largest companies in the world have their headquarters in this mountainous European country. Switzerland exports world renown products including wine, cheese, chocolate and precision timepieces. Travelers to the country will find plenty of outdoor activities including skiing, hiking and dining at fine restaurants. Visit the Matterhorn which is surrounded by glaciers and snow-covered year round, ensuring skiing even during the summer. You can see all the way to Germany and France at the lookout tower located at the very top of the mountain.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the Swiss franc instead of the euro.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a vignette sticker to use the main highways. Place the sticker on the lower corner or top-center of the windshield. Know that the vignette is the only toll in Switzerland and that it is valid for a year.

  3. Step 3

Limit strenuous activity the first day at resorts at 5,248 feet and above.

  4. Step 4

Pack for atmospheric-related changes. Carry a warm sweater, even during the summer, to prepare for the cool air in the mountains. Bring sunscreen or a hat to wear in the thin atmosphere of high altitudes. Use sunglasses to avoid being blinded by the sun shining off glaciers. Prepare for hiking or walking by taking the proper footwear.

Tips & Warnings
  • Realize that when you rent a car in Switzerland, it already has a vignette. Ask the rental company to provide the vignette for you if you rent a car outside Switzerland.
  • Obtain a vignette both at the border, at most gas stations and at any post office. Pay with cash or euros.
  • Avoid excursions that take place above 6,560 feet if you are an adult who has heart problems.
