The Shetland Folk Festival is a volunteer-run annual music festival which has taken place on the island since 1981. It normally runs over a four-day period in early May and has previously attracted some of the world’s finest folk acts, including Dougie Maclean and Elvis Costello. To enjoy a weekend at the UK’s most northerly folk festival requires careful planning.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase an advance Shetland Folk Festival Society membership in late January. This will allow you to book event tickets at reduced rates before non-members.

  2. Step 2

Order tickets for the events you wish to attend as soon as you receive the festival program. Members receive this notification in early April, a week before non-members, so act quickly to avoid missing the more popular events.

  3. Step 3

Book accommodation well in advance. Options available on the Shetland Isles include camping, bed and breakfasts”, guest houses and hotels. There is also one youth hostel. While events are held all over the islands, Lerwick is traditionally a popular accommodation destination amongst festival-goers.

  4. Step 4

Enquire as to whether your festival membership gets you a reduction when booking any part of your weekend trip. Some hotels offer reduced rates for members.

  5. Step 5

Organize transport to Shetland early, as around the festival all modes of transport to the island will be busy. There are two ways of reaching Shetland: by ferry from Aberdeen or by plane from Glasgow, Edinburgh or Aberdeen. Both services run daily but can suffer delays in extreme inclement weather.

Tips & Warnings
  • Tickets sell out quickly. Join the Shetland Folk Festival Society, and then order your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
  • Membership costs around £13 pounds for an adult and £6 for a child. On average your membership will save you £4 on the cost of each event ticket.
  • Shetland Folk Festival is renowned for providing entertainment through the night, so come prepared for little sleep.
  • Concession ticket prices are available to those over 60, children, students and those in receipt of social security benefit.
  • Shetland in May can suffer from terrible weather. Bring warm, waterproof clothing.
