Glasgow is a city famed the world over for its huge variety of pubs. This, coupled with the well known friendliness of the locals, makes it the perfect destination for a pub crawl. While you can easily do an impromptu pub crawl in Glasgow on any night and in most areas, it pays to plan carefully in advance.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide in advance what kind of pubs you would like to stop at on your pub crawl. Glasgow offers everything from up-market cocktail bars to old-fashioned Irish pubs, so decide in advance and dress accordingly.

  2. Step 2

Select which area of the city you will hold your pub crawl. While the city centre is the obvious destination, often venturing further afield can be rewarding.

  3. Step 3

Plan a rough route and make it known to all members of your group so that any stragglers lost along the way can catch up with you at a later stage.

  4. Step 4

Start early, as pubs in Glasgow are not open beyond midnight unless in possession of a late-night license.

  5. Step 5

Speak to local people. Glaswegians are normally proud of their city’s reputation as a friendly and fun city, and will be willing to offer you advice as to where the next destination of your pub crawl should be.

Tips & Warnings
  • A good alternative to the city centre is the West End of the city, which offers a less frenetic drinking environment. The Merchant city, located on the edge of the city centre, also contains an interesting variety of bars in close proximity to one another.
  • Expect to pay around £2 for a pint of lager, although drinks prices vary greatly from pub to pub
  • Bring valid identification, in the form of a driver’s license or passport. This may be required to gain entry to certain establishments.
  • Take the chance to sample some of the many renowned local beers and whiskies.
  • If the bar is busy, hold a banknote visibly in your hand and try to make eye contact with a member of the bar-staff. Be sure and say thankyou once you have been served, as this will guarantee you quicker service next time you are at the bar.
  • Be prepared to stand, as pubs in Glasgow can get very busy on any night of the week. If a quieter pub crawl is desired, it is best to avoid Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Do not arrive in a large rowdy group, as this may lead to you being refused entry.
  • Quiet local pubs can be very unwelcoming to visitors, particularly if you act in a way not in-keeping with the general atmosphere.
  • Do not wear football colours. They are banned in most pubs except on match-days, and you could attract unwanted attention.
  • While Glasgow is generally a friendly city, it can become very intimidating, particularly on weekends.
  • It is against the law to smoke inside any Scottish pub.
