Step 1
Take into account the head size of the racket. The larger the head size the bigger the sweet spot and as a result the more powerful the racket. There is also more margin far error, but on the downside, it gives you less control as usually with smaller head players strike the ball more cleanly. In general, beginners use a racket with a large head and advanced players use a racket with a small head.

Step 2
Look at the length of the racket. If you are thinking of using it in a tournament, the legal length is between 27 to 29 inches. Most players tend to go for the longer 29-inch racket because it allows for more power and reach.
-
Step 3
Check the racket for good weight and balance. All rackets should be head heavy and weigh between 11 and 13 ounces. Heavier rackets give more control to a player, but it harder to generate the power of a lighter racket which can travel faster through the air.

Step 4
Grip the racket. You will know if the grip is good because your hand will be able to wrap around the handle without you having to grip too tightly. However, if the grip is not right, but you like the racket, the shop should have the facilities to regrip it.
