Appear on HGTV's Yard Sale

Often called the globe's longest stretch of flea markets, the World's Longest Yard Sale spans 630 miles and crosses five states. Yard Sale Headquarters in Jamestown, Tennessee hosts the annual sale every August. For the past several years, HGTV has filmed annual specials about the event. Read this article for tips on how to get your booth featured on the program.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up shop near the sale's headquarters in Fentress County, Tennessee, where you can expect HGTV to do some filming. On the Yard Sale website, find a list of phone numbers for property owners in the area willing to rent vendor spaces.

    • 2

Design your booth to catch attention and draw crowds. If an unusually large crowd forms at your booth, producers might notice. Post colorful, visible and wacky signs. Feature live entertainment that can be heard from a distance. Sell food and cool beverages because the weather is usually hot and people will always need a break from shopping.

    • 3

Sell an item likely to fit into one of the categories that HGTV plans to highlight: best, worst or wackiest. "Best" could mean the largest collection, the best deal or the best item, such as the oldest or most historic antique. "Worst" is not something dirty or gross, but more like an item or collection so useless that is becomes noteworthy. The "Wackiest" could range from the oddest collection to the most bizarre item.

    • 4

Display items that hold the most appeal for the general shopper and therefore will likely attract more business. Think of standard flea market and antique store fare: collections, antiques, Americana, pop culture and furniture. World's Longest Yard Sale officials discourage the sale of clothing, and shoppers here usually show little interest in clothes.

As a last ditch effort to get noticed, provide your buyers with access to a clean bathroom. The Yard Sale route has a dearth of reasonable facilities, and buyers will view yours like an oasis in the desert.
