Things You'll Need:
- Measuring tape
- Sewing machine or large needle
- Nylon thread
- 2 screw hooks
- Electric drill
- 4 grommets
- 2 key rings
- 4 sections of rope
- 4 stakes
-
Step 1
Measure the awning area and purchase a slightly larger piece of canvas or plastic to allow for a hem.
-
Step 2
Hem the edges of the shade cloth that you're using to build the awning. Do this by hand or with a sewing machine, using a straight running stitch. Install a grommet into each corner of the cloth.
-
Step 3
Drill the two pilot holes into your house where the awning corners will be located. Insert a screw hook into each hole. Making pilot holes first prevents the wood siding from splitting, and makes it easier for you to accurately insert the screws.
-
Step 4
Put a key ring through each of the two grommets on the side that's going against the house. Place one key ring on the left screw hook and the other on the right screw hook. This creates one side of the awning.
-
Step 5
Stretch the shade cloth out to determine where each pole should go. The poles should either be able to be driven into the ground or have flat ends to sit on pavement. Set the poles up and attach the shade cloth by hooking a grommet over each pole.
-
Step 6
Tether the awning down using the rope. Tie two sections of rope on each grommet where the poles are. Pull one section to the front on each side and stake them to the ground. Do the same off to each side using the remaining two sections.

on 10/30/2007 HAS ANY ONE GOT DIRECTIONS FOR A CAFE STYLE AWNING TYPE WINDOW TREATMENT FOR INSIDE THE HOME? THESE ARE USUALLY SEEN OUTSIDE OF A BISTRO/CAFE BUT I WOULD LIKE TO PUT IT IN A HOME. I AM USING CANVAS FABRIC. I AM HAVING TROUBLE FIGURING OUT WHAT TO USE FOR RODS/HARDWARE.
