How to Dress Grunge

An distinctive fashion trend developed in Seattle during the early nineties. This look evolved from a genre of music referred to as grunge. Originally intended as non-fashion, or a movement away from fashion, it quickly caught on across the country. Here are a few staple items you need and some guidelines to follow if you want to dress grunge.

  1. Step 1

    Wear dark or subdued colors. Bright and cheery colors are usually nowhere to be found in grunge scenes. Colors that were popular were black and white, gray, forest green, brown and indigo.

  2. Step 2

    Keep hair longer. It was most fashionable for women to have long and straight hair. Men also had longer styles. Hair was usually worn natural and appeared unkempt. Details were often sported in longer hair such as tiny braids, beads or dread locks.

  3. Step 3

    Wear a flannel shirt. Flannel shirts were probably the staple item of the grunge era. They were worn by girls and guys alike. They were worn in many ways, buttoned up the front, open in front, or tied around the waist.

  4. Step 4

    Pair a Henley with a flannel for the ultimate grunge look. They were worn under flannels, under overall jeans, under t-shirts or even alone. Colored ones were also worn, but the natural off-white ones were the most popular.

  5. Step 5

    Make sure pants worn go with the grunge look. Jeans were often stonewashed. Most jeans were baggy. Overalls were popular. Sometimes girls wore bell-bottomed jeans.

  6. Step 6

    Wear shoes that are large. Large and chunky shoes were popular. Work boots were favored by men and women alike. Chuck Taylors were popular, and so were combat boots.
