Prepare yourself for the duties of a CIO. This can include managing people, vendor relationships and business operations. It can also include researching technology and industry trends, setting goals and attending conferences. Be ready for long hours and frequent travel.

Determine if you have the right personality qualifications. Self-confidence, intelligence, wisdom, good judgment and motivation are all good qualities. It's also important to know your limits, have an interest in using technology to improve your business and show ethical behavior.

Work on improving skills that are necessary for a CIO. You must communicate effectively, think and plan strategically, incorporate and evaluate large amounts of information, make decisions and negotiate.
