Things You'll Need
- Cloth measuring tape
- Cotton fabric
- Material-marking pen
- Sewing machine with thread
Making a homemade bandanna for your dog takes little time. It's rewarding and inexpensive. You can create a bandanna in any print you like that accents your dog's coat color. You can make a reversible bandanna that provides two different looks; you can make bandannas for seasons and holidays. Add appliques to personalize them.
Wrap a cloth measuring tape around your dog's neck where his collar rests and read the measurement where the tip intersects the measuring tape. Add 14 inches to the measurement for a small dog, 16 inches for a medium dog or 18 inches for a large dog.
Lay cotton fabric on a flat surface and transfer your dog's neck measurement plus the extra inches in a square with a material-marking pen. Cut the square out of the material with scissors.
Fold the square in half with perpendicular corners together to form a rectangle. Press the seam flat with an iron and cut along the pressed line with scissors.
Place the two fabric triangles face down on your work surface, side by side. Fold about a half-inch around each triangle on all three sides, and press the folds in place with an iron.
Flip one triangle onto the other so the folds are together. Match them up squarely and top-stitch around all three sides about an eighth of an inch from the edges.
