How to Use Typing Software

Typing software is a great way to learn to touch type. The job market opens up to you if you can type 40 to 50 words per minute. Typing programs let you practice 10-key typing, useful for data entry work. It's possible to improve writing, grammar and spelling skills when you don't worry about where to put your fingers next. Follow these steps to use typing software effectively.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Warm up to the typing program on the Typing Practice site. Jo Edkins created the site to encourage kids to learn the placement of letters on the keyboard. You type in the letter shown and get scored on how many you did right in 15, 30 and 60-second sessions.
Step2
Take the initial skills level typing test included with the program. Alternatively you can use a typing test website (see link in Resources). You want to know where you are before you begin the program.
Step3
Try out the games on your program. Most typing software includes 2 or 3 games, although some have as many as ten. They're a fun way to try out the software, but for real learning you have to go through the training.
Step4
Work on learning where the letters are. Typing software has exercises for left hand, right hand and individual finger practice. They introduce letters gradually and move you up to the next level when you're ready.
Step5
Do speed building alongside accuracy building. They go hand in hand in teaching you to touch type. Ignore mistakes at the beginning.
Step6
Take timed speed and accuracy tests and note your scores. You should see progressive improvement, so don't fret over slow beginnings or bad days.
Step7
Practice ergonomics when using your typing software. Sit with your back straight but not stiff and your feet flat on the floor. Good habits now translate to more efficiency on the job.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take a break every 50 minutes while using your typing program to stretch your limbs and relieve your eyes.
  • Start kids out on the Typing Practice webpage so they get to know the letters.
  • Don't forget the 10-key tests, which are helpful in most jobs.
