How to Plug Drafts in Window Frames

Plugging drafts around a window can help conserve heat and reduce your energy bills as well. Follow these six steps to make your home cozy during the cooler months.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Remove interior window trim and fill gaps around the window with fiberglass insulation. Stuff into gaps with a putty knife, being careful not to pack too tightly. Replace window trim.

  2. Step 2

    Caulk around the exterior of the window with all-weather caulk. Remove any old caulking before adding new caulk.

  3. Step 3

    Purchase molding-strip films from a hardware store. Cut to size with a utility knife by mitering the corners of each strip at 45-degree angles. Peel the paper from backs of the strip pieces and set them in place around the exterior of the window.

  4. Step 4

    Add interior weatherstripping between the sash and frame to plug drafts from around a window. Use plastic, vinyl, felt or foam strips, and install per the manufacturer's instructions.

  5. Step 5

    Use a heat-shrink film kit from at any hardware store. Clean the interior window trim and cut the film 2 inches larger than the window.

  6. Step 6

    Place two-sided tape on the window trim, press the film into place and heat the film with a hair dryer set on high. Move the dryer back and forth about 1/4 inch from the film until the film shrinks and any creases and wrinkles vanish.

  • Covering windows with heavy drapes or blinds can reduce drafts from around the windows.
