Build a distinct entrance into the sanctuary. This will create the feeling of separation from the outside world as one enters the sanctuary. Use a gate or an archway into an area that you keep visually and physically separated from the outside.

Incorporate water and water plants into your design. The sound effects of running water can be incredibly soothing. Still water can provide peaceful images, ideal for meditation. Plant beautiful acquatic plants to provide color.

Consider using the garden as an animal sanctuary. Plant berry bushes and use bird feed to attract wild birds. Plant flowers to create a butterfly sanctuary.

Think how you want the colors to effect you when you're planning the garden. The colors should be personally moving. A monochromatic green garden can be extremely healing and peaceful. A red garden may be energizing to the soul. A mix of colors is always an option, but don't make it too busy.

Remember the effects of lighting. Consider the the balance you wantto achieve between shady privacy and sunny openness. Determine how the sun will hit certain areas of the garden sanctuary at different times of the day. The plants' longevity and presentation will be affected by the light.

Have at least one sitting area with a metal or wooden bench. Pick a place that is comfortable and affords you a beautiful view. This should be a place where you can sit quietly to reflect and observe.
