Determine eligibility by tracing the family line to a Revolutionary War patriot. The patriot did not have to serve in the military; patriotic or civil service to the American cause is sufficient.

Visit the SAR website and contact the state "New Member Helper" who will give assistance in documenting your ancestor. He will also find a local SAR member to provide information on programs and meetings. Two SAR members must also give a recommendation for membership.

Submit the application for approval and include payment for application and dues. The SAR has several levels of membership, each with a different dues amount.
