Many people use expensive software programs to edit their digital photographs. However, several free, open source options recently have become available. It is relatively simple to find free photo editing software online if you know where to look.

From Quick Guide: Using the Best Photo Software
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit the website for the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). The program is very similar to Adobe Photoshop, but is completely free to download. Use GIMP to edit, crop, remove red eye, adjust color and otherwise manipulate photos. You also can use filtering effects and turn your pictures from color to monochrome. You even can create animated gifs with GIMP.

  2. Step 2

On the GIMP website, click "Downloads" in the side bar to the left of the page. On the next page, follow the instructions, and then click on the latest version of GIMP for downloading. When asked if you want to open or save this file, select "Save."

  3. Step 3

At the prompt, select "Install" after the program files have downloaded. It will take a few minutes for the program to install, depending on the speed of you computer.

  4. Step 4

Take a tutorial from the GIMP website after your program downloads. In the sidebar of the GIMP website, select "Tutorials" located under the heading entitled "Documentation." The tutorial will explain how to use GIMP to edit your photos.

  5. Step 5

Choose "All Programs" from the start menu of your computer. Select GIMP from your list of programs. This will open GIMP. You now can edit your photos.
