1
Determine the extent of any damage to the tiles and surrounding area. Ensure that the damage was not caused by leaking water or another condition that may effect the work about to be undertaken.
-
2
Clean the tub tile to be refinished with a commercial chemical cleaning agent. These agents commonly come in a two-step kit. The first step abrasively cleans the tile of any debris, and the second properly washes away any traces of the first chemical process.

3
Use a palm sander with a medium to fine grit and sand the entire area to be refinished. This step allows the finish to adhere properly to the surface of the tub tile. Wipe away any dust from this process with a damp cloth and allow drying.
-
4
Tape off any areas that will not be refinished to define the work area. Use newspaper or other material to ensure any excess finishing materials don't overlap onto other areas.
-
5
Tub tile refinishing requires a chemical bonding agent to be applied for the primer and topcoats to adhere to. Have the local home improvement store salesperson supply this and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
-
6
Allow the bonding agent to dry. Apply two coats of refinishing primer with a spray gun.
-
7
Apply 2 to 3 coats of acrylic topcoat. Spray on one coat and allow to dry before applying the second and third. Each coat takes approximately 30 minutes to dry.

Tips & Warnings
When spraying coats of primer or paint, spray just to the edge of the paper and slightly overlap the next pass on the way back for even coating.
Always work in a well-ventilated area when using paints and primers. Wear a ventilator mask.
Avoid skin contact with any chemical cleaners or primers as this may result in a rash or unfavorable reaction.
