How to Maintain Fence Rows

Maintaining a fence row not only makes the fence look better and uncluttered, it can prolong the life of a fence. Maintaining fence rows is required by law in some states. Learn how to maintain them by following these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Check the condition of the fence along the fence row. If the fence needs to be repaired or replaced, it can be torn down, making it easy to clean up brush and trees along the fence row.
Step2
Determine if you are responsible for the entire fence row or if a neighbor who shares it must pay for half the maintenance. Some states require each person be responsible for half of the fence, unless the two parties consent to a different arrangement.
Step3
Make repairs to the fence. Depending on the type of fence, repairs may be easier after the fence row is cleaned. A broken wire fence can get tangled in brush, making it hard to see when cleaning. This fence should be removed so it does not interfere with your tractor or other equipment.
Step4
Use a tractor or lawn mower, depending on the size of the fence row. Mow as closely as possible to the fence. Use a weed eater to get under the fence and around the fence posts. If the area is large enough, you may have to spray with chemicals instead of using the equipment.
Step5
Repeat these steps according to the grass growth in your area. Some fence rows can be maintained by cutting them every month in the summer, depending on rainfall.
