Becoming a freelance copywriter is a good career move if you like writing for businesses and working for yourself. Once you start looking at all of the possible projects you can write about, you may become overwhelmed. This is why you need to find a copywriting niche. Narrow the projects to things you enjoy, and your new business will become more profitable and fun.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Decide what industry you enjoy writing about. Writing about topics you are interested in makes the job easier and more enjoyable. Almost industry is possible, but make sure it can be profitable.
Step2
Narrow down the types of things you write to a few projects in which you can specialize. Newsletters, brochures, web copy, advertisements, catalog copy, white papers and press releases are needed in almost every niche. Choose which types of projects you enjoy putting together and stick with a few of them.
Step3
Become an expert in your field. Do this by writing on your topic and the type of project you enjoy. For example, if you choose to write brochures for airlines, establish yourself as an expert by writing exclusively in this area. Soon you can know more about this area than most others, including your clients.
Step4
Market yourself as a copywriter for a certain industry or area. This can lead to many more jobs in that specific area, furthering your knowledge in your copywriting niche.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose an industry that you enjoy. If you enjoy a topic, it is much easier to research, learn and write about.
  • Don't just choose a niche in an industry that is profitable and popular at the moment. These can change rapidly, leaving you with writing experience that you can no longer use and aren't interested in.
