How to Maintain a Gas Water Heater Flue

Gas fired water heaters provide hot water for use in many homes. Safe installation of these units is required because the gas used to heat the water produces toxic gasses. A metal flue pipe attached to the top of the water heater provides the safe release of these toxic gasses. Learn how to perform periodic maintenance to prevent trapped carbon monoxide gasses from leaking into your house.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
Step1
Determine that the flue assembly aligns correctly between the top of the water heater to the wall. The flue assembly must rise in an upward direction towards the chimney.
Step2
Check the flue pipe for back draft. Hold your hand next to the draft diverter on the top of the water heater and feel for air flowing out. The flue is functioning properly when there is no outward air flow. Outward air flow indicates a blockage that requires immediate corrective action.
Step3
Inspect all flue assembly joints and the seal around the connection of the flue pipe to the wall. Repair cracks or openings immediately using aluminum flashing with high temperature silicone caulk. Remember to wear work gloves when handling the flue pipe as it may be hot.
Step4
Contact a service person. He can check the flue draft pressure and sample the flue gasses for toxic content.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should install a carbon monoxide detector in your home.
  • You should perform maintenance checks twice a year.
