How to Use A Spud Wrench

There are misconceptions about what a spud wrench truly is. By simply looking at a spud wrench, it seems the same as any other wrench. The term and the tool is derived from the piece of piping found on older toilets or sinks called a "spud." It is made to tighten and loosen the collar, bolts or other hardware holding the spud to the toilet or sink.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase an adjustable spud wrench. Because today's toilets do not necessarily need a spud wrench for repair, you are better off buying an adjustable spud wrench, rather than an array of specific sizes. Check out True Value, Home Depot or your local hardware store to buy a spud wrench.

  2. Step 2

Place the spud wrench over the hexagonal slip nut. (These are what commonly fasten the old toilets to the spud.)

  3. Step 3

Tighten the spud wrench around the nut, using the adjustable dial. Be sure that the spud wrench has a firm grip before turning.

  4. Step 4

Turn the spud wrench to the left to loosen the slip nut or collar, or turn the spud wrench to the right to tighten the slip nut or collar.
