A seat wrench is an L-shaped plumber's tool used specifically to remove the washer seat in a faucet. You must replace the seat located inside the faucet body if the faucet leaks, and the rubber washer frequently needs changing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Seat wrench
  • Silicone rubber sealant
  1. Step 1

Turn the water off underneath the sink or the main shutoff valve at the meter.

  2. Step 2

Pop off or unscrew the faucet cap. Loosen the screws in the faucet handle with a Phillips screwdriver and remove the handle.

  3. Step 3

Remove the faucet assembly by loosening the nut that holds it in place. If the exposed copper valve seat has a square or hexagonal hole through the center or a screwdriver slot, it is replaceable.

  4. Step 4

Take out the old valve seat by inserting the seat wrench and turning counter-clockwise. The wrench has a combination of square and hex heads that fits most faucet seats.

  5. Step 5

Install the new seat turning the wrench clockwise to tighten it.

  6. Step 6

Replace the faucet assembly and tighten it. Put the handle and faucet cap back on.

  7. Step 7

Turn the water supply on and check for leaks by turning the faucet on and off.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a pad between the faucet handles and tools when you are removing them to prevent damage.
  • Place a paper towel over the drain before you start removing parts so you don't lose them down the drain.
  • Add a little silicone rubber sealant around the threads of the new seat before you replace it so it will be easier to remove during the next repair.
