Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand they are made of polyurethane or latex. Latex is slightly more reliable and more readily available. Use only water-based lubricants with latex.

  2. Step 2

Choose polyurethane if you're allergic to latex. They are thinner than latex and therefore some people may feel more sensitivity. You can use either water or oil based lubricants.

  3. Step 3

Decide if you want lubricated or non-lubricated types. Some condoms come lubricated with a silicone or a water-based lubricant. This feature can make it easier to use put on. It may also help prevent condom breakage.

  4. Step 4

Choose to purchase with or without spermicides called Nonoxynol 9. Use them with this spermicide only if both you and your partner are HIV negative. This substance may cause sores in some that increase the risk of HIV transmission. However, if you're unsure, using offers more protection than unprotected sex.

  5. Step 5

Review the different shapes of condoms. They're available in regular shape with straight sides, form fit or flared fit. Most have a reservoir tip on them, but plain tips are also available.

  6. Step 6

Consider the sizes of condoms available. They come in different widths and lengths.

  7. Step 7

Find a sample kit to purchase. These kits will give you an assortment, so that you can pick your favorite.

Tips & Warnings
  • Store them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Handle them with care.
  • A female condom is also available for protection from sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Some people may have an allergic reaction to latex, so use polyurethane types as an alternative.
