Lining your driveway or sidewalk with luminarias is a simple, yet beautiful, way to create a festive scene for the holidays. Luminarias are popular in the American Southwest. The glowing bags aren't just for Christmas anymore. Using stencils and colored bags creates the perfect luminarias for any celebration.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Paper lunch bags
  • Sand or gravel
  • Votive candles or tea lights
  • BBQ fireplace lighter or fireplace matches

Step1
Open each paper bag to stand on its own. Fold the top 2 inches of each bag for stability. This will come in handy when using luminarias on a windy night.
Step2
Fill the bottom of each bag with 1 to 2 inches of sand or gravel. The sand weighs down the bag and gives a secure place for the candle.
Step3
Place one votive candle or tea light in the bottom center of each bag. Gently push it into the sand so it can't move around.
Step4
Arrange the bags 1 to 4 feet apart from each other along your driveway or sidewalk.
Step5
Light luminaria's candle using a BBQ fireplace lighter or fireplace matches. Using a longer device allows you to light the luminaria on the ground without burning yourself or the bag.
Step6
Decorate your luminaria using stencils for specific holiday or festive theme. Purchase colored bags and create a stunning look for your home.

Tips & Warnings

  • When choosing decorative accessories for luminaria, make sure materials are not flammable.
  • Lumiarias can catch fire, especially on windy nights. They should only be placed outside, away from flammable materials and foliage.
